Mary Gyseman has sent us another family history. This time it’s the Trethowans of Trethowan, Constantine
Association of Local Historians
The Constantine History Group hosted the Cornwall Association of Local Historians’ visit to Constantine on Saturday 19 June.
27 members of the CALH were given presentations on historic Constantine and the formation of the Tolmen Centre and Heritage Group by Gerald Trethowan and CHC Curator Tracey Clowes. They then visited the Heritage Collection and saw the changes made to the Methodist Church which has formed the very vibrant cultural centre of Constantine village.
Following a pasty lunch, the visitors were given a conducted tour through the village by Liz Moore to the St Constantine Parish Church where Effie Harvie and Austral Boote, members of the Church Recording Group who are preparing a thorough inventory of the building and its artefacts, gave a fascinating talk on the work done so far and explained some of the background to the stained glass, stonework and objects of interest in the Church. History Group Secretary, Geraldine Gove, then conducted a walk around the headstones in the graveyard and revealed some poignant stories of some of the lives of those who lay there.
The guests then returned to the Tolmen Centre for tea where John Ballard, Events Secretary, thanked Geoff Roberts, the Chairman, and his team of hosts for a very warm ‘Constantine Welcome’ and a most enjoyable visit. In addition to the speakers, behind the scenes help was given by Betty Hodges, Melanie and John Richards, Sue and Peter Tatham and Richard Clowes.
